dc.description.abstract"The use of controlled switching converters as power supplies is growing in different applications. Some of these devices correct the power factor and are inexpensive to manufacture. In this thesis the Cûk topology is modified and used as power supply of low power magnetic circuits. This modification has a current output to the charge (instead of the traditional voltage output) and it operates in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) at the input. DCM operation allows reducing the hardware used in conjunction with classical 2- stage converter approaches. It provides the necessary output current to the charge and achieves a power factor close to the unity. This is used in the design, analysis and construction (physical implementation) of a DC-DC converter to power an electromagnet that removes ferrous scrap in the post-harvest stage of seeds. The DC-DC converter for controlling the electromagnet should provide current output (traditionally in voltage) but also, it will be fed to an AC; therefore, the proposed system considers a stage of power factor correction and a control over the output current. It is also analyzed, simulated, and physically implemented. The modeling of the open loop converter is based on the Method of averaged state variables and their relative stability is demonstrated using Bode diagrams. The system was simulated and further experimental tests of the converter and the magnetic circuit were performed. These tests show satisfactory results in the power factor and current output control. This thesis is divided into five chapters. At the beginning, the importance of the topic is justified and the objectives are outlined. In the first chapter, the state of the art of the converters is described, as well as its background, and the harmonic distortion and power factor are defined. In Chapter 2, we briefly describe the basic converter topologies, the proposed converter and its theory of operation is presented. In chapter three, the mathematical modeling of the proposed converter is by the Method of averaged state variables (considering an inductor in DCM) and its stability analysis. In chapter four, calculations are made in order to obtain the values of the electronic elements used in the physical implementation. Chapter five shows the experimental results of the prototype built. Finally, the conclusions and future work are presented."
