dc.description.abstract"In the semiarid region of Central Mexico, overgrazing has led to severe reduction in grassland productivity. Diverse biological soil crusts frequently cover open interspaces devoid of vegetation. Even though this ecosystem type is very abundant in the semiarid zones of San Luis Potosi, we have limited knowledge on the identity and functional role of biological crusts especially for total C and N contribution and soil stability. Hence, the objective of this study was to characterize the biological crusts of degraded grassland and to examine their influence on the total C and N content, and the C:N ratio and soil stability. We characterized the species composition of the vegetation and biological soil crusts and determined the proportion of basal cover (vegetation and crust) and gap size in the vertical and horizontal direction with respect to the slope. At the tussock level, we characterized the spatial distribution of the biological crust and vertical and horizontal distribution of roots biomass with respect to their position along the slope. Total soil C and N content, C:N ratio and soil stability were evaluated at the microescale level. Overall, the grass cover was lower than that of the biological crust. Bouteloua scorpioides was the dominant grass species. The soil was covered by six crust types with different morphologies, Acarospora schleicheri, Buellia sp., Disploschistes sp. and Placynthiella uliginosa, Peltula michoacanensis (N2 fixer), and one fungal species. Placynthiella uliginosa and the fungal crust were the most abundant crust types at the landscape level and at the tussock level and P. uliginosa was more common and abundant below plant tussocks than above the tussock with respect to the slope. Root biomass was lower at greater distances from the tussocks and at greater soil depth. Crusts with a greater tallus conferred greater soil total C and N and stability than the thin films of fungi. The grass tussocks do not exhibit band arrangements, thus allowing for extensive run-off. Hence, the abundant crust cover in the interspaces appears crucial for the contribution to soil C and N, and soil stability to these degraded grassland ecosystems. This work is a first effort to improve our understanding on the functional role of the biological soil crusts in degraded grasslands and their contribution to rangeland health."
