dc.description.abstract"Seed dormancy is the state in which a viable seed does not germinate although it has enough humidity, temperature and oxygen concentration. It is considered that the principal function of dormancy is the prevention of seed germination during periods that might be unsuitable for seedling establishment. It has been suggested that the impermeability of the seed coat is caused by an anatomical structure of waterproof layers, known as "water gap". This structure is closed when the seed is ripe and open in response to appropriate environmental signals, such as high temperatures, humidity or heat. In many species with physical dormancy, the "water gap" serves as a sensor of environmental signals for germination and once dormancy is broken it is the initial route of water entry into the seed. The main aim of this study is to determine the factors affecting the breaking of physical dormancy of seeds of six species of the genus Lupinus (Lupinus elegans, L. exaltatus, L. mexicanus, L. montanus, L. reflexus and L. rotundiflorus) from different localities of the State of Jalisco (“Sierra de Quila”, “Lagos de Moreno”, “Ojuelos”, “Tapalpa” y “Nevado de Colima”) and several years of storage. There were two pre-treatments with different levels, which consisted of: a) soaking the seeds in boiling water for 5, 10 and 15 seconds and b) incubating on dry sand and wet sand at 100°C for 60 minutes, as well as a control set. We also evaluated the anatomy of the "water gap". The results showed that the best treatment to break physical dormancy in Lupinus was boiling water regardless of the time at which they were exposed, followed by wet sand, dry sand, and controls. Fresh seeds of L. elegans after treatment in boiling water germinated less than seeds with one and two years of storage, in both wet and dry sand 1-year stored seeds had higher seed germination (%) than seeds of other ages (0 years and two years). For L. exaltatus 1-year stored seeds had higher seed germination (%) after treatment with boiling water compared with fresh seeds, two and three years of age. In addition, it was higher seed germination (%) of 3-year seeds in sand (wet and dry). L. mexicanus showed higher germination in all aged seeds (one, two, three and four years) than in fresh seeds in hot water, and compared to sand (wet and dry) fresh and 2-year seeds had higher germination (%) than other aged seeds."
