dc.description.abstract"Atomic clusters constitute a new phase of matter, being the bridge between atoms and bulk. These systems have generated considerable interest, triggering one extensive research due to the fact that their physical and chemical properties depend strongly on size, geometry, and chemical species present in the cluster. In these finite systems it is possible to appreciate catalytic effects that strongly differ from their bulk counterparts. The fundamental interest of the reactivity of nanoparticles grew strongly since the discovery done by Haruta et al., demonstrating that gold nanoparticles supported on oxide surfaces are catalytically active, even though gold in bulk is practically inert. First-principles calculations (ab initio) based on density functional theory (DFT) are an important tool for investigating the reactivity of clusters, nanoparticles and surfaces, demonstrating reliability in reproducing experimental results depending on the functional to describe the exchange-correlation energy. In this thesis it was carried out a study of the electronic, structural and reactivity properties of platinum clusters and alloys. Recent experiments have shown that platinum clusters are catalytically active for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in the subnanometer region, however, the origin of the catalytic activity in these systems is not fully understood until now, since studies of platinum nanoparticles indicated that the border effect increases dramatically when the diameter decreases, being adverse for ORR due to strong ORR intermediates binding. However, we have found that the active sites in subnanometric clusters are located at different sites, that is to say, in the face and edge sites, with Pt-reactant interactions close to the optimal target. We have determined that the type of the structures adopted by the platinum such as layered and pyramidal, is the key factor for the catalytic activity in the subnanometer region, while transition metals generally adopt more compact structures, which are not ideal for the reactions. In the second part of this thesis we carried out a study of the catalytic properties of FePt nanoparticles. Due to the complexity in the study of alloys, we investigated the reactivity of subnanometer clusters and found that FePt concentrations close to 40% of Fe in these alloys generate slightly weaker ORR-reactant bindings than pure platinum, improving the separation of products from the catalyst."
