dc.description.abstract"The Central Valleys of Oaxaca, Mexico, are practically located in the center of Oaxaca State. They formed a "Y" depression inside the Sierra Madre del Sur, where the NW branch represents the Etla Valley aquifer and the NE branch represents the Tlacolula Valley aquifer, both of them are joined in the south part of Oaxaca city to form the aquifer of Zimatlan Valley. These aquifers are constituted by alluvial formations with thicknesses of up to several hundreds of meters, delimited in their base by mylonitic rocks of the Sierra Juarez from the Mesozoic and metamorphic rocks from the Precambrian. There is an important amount of groundwater extraction from the three aquifers; basically for potable water service to the communities settled around the area and for the irrigation of their small agriculture lands causing the increase in the hydraulic gradients, the deepening of the extraction and the depletion of the resource in some wells. The use of the DRASTIC method allows identifying the aquifer vulnerability to contamination of the aquifers Etla, Tlacolula and Zimatlan (Central Valleys of Oaxaca State) in an integral way. The influence of local superficial streams polluted with waste water from the communities is analized. A contamination index was determined using a INEGI GIS made for water quality."
