dc.description.abstract"Water recharge areas are the main sources of fresh water and play an important role in the hydrological cycle, allowing the conservation, preservation, renewal and use of water. The SSMVC has been considered as a recharge zone towards the deep aquifer in San Luis Potosi Valley; however, currently there are not enough and robust studies to confirm it. The aim of this work was to determine if the SSMVC works or not as a water recharge zone, applying Multivariate Statistical Techniques: correlation analysis, cluster analysis (CA) and principal components analysis (PCA). A data matrix was integrated with 66 study points and 12 variables (altitude, slope, temperature, soil type, vegetation type, precipitation, geology, relative humidity, PET, land use, runoff coefficient and hydraulic conductivity). The variables were determined at each study point through calculations, estimates and layer overlap in a GIS. The correlation analysis showed high positive and negative correlations between the climatic variables: PET, temperature, humidity and precipitation, while geology was the non-climatic variable that was most correlated with others, highlighting its importance in the study area. The CA by K-means classified the study points in three groups, where cluster 2 presented a recharge potential due to geological composition (alluvium) and land use (agriculture); however, factors such as high PET, temperature and low humidity are limiting this fact, while in cluster 1 and 3 recharge is limited by variables such as geology, altitude and slope, and infiltration could be favored by the faults present in the study area. The PCA revealed that variables such as hydraulic conductivity, precipitation and humidity may favor infiltration, while recharge is limited by the geological units present in the study area, high levels of PET and temperature. On the other hand, Electrical Resistivity Tomography’s (ETR) were analyzed and related, indicating that the combination of vegetation and geology in the upper parts of the SSMVC plays an important role in the surface infiltration, reaffirming the existence of a sub-hypodermical water flow. The results obtained in this study demonstrate that the climatic and geological conditions of the SSMVC do not allow it to function optimally as a recharge zone towards the deep aquifer; however, it complies with other important ecological processes such as the existence of a sub-hypodermical water flow, which can contribute to the filling of embankments and dams as well as the support of other ecosystem services. The results will contribute to the optimal protection, conservation and sustainable use of water resources in the San Luis Potosí Valley."
