dc.description.abstract" This thesis explores the benefits of introducing artificial delays in control loops. In par- ticular, a renewable energy system composed of an arrangement of hydrogen fuel cells, a DC-DC buck converter and a resistive load is studied. This system is regulated by a Pro- portional Integral Retarded (PIR) controller, which is tuned using spectral analysis to render the trajectories of the closed-loop system with the maximum exponential decay rate. Addi- tionally, in the context of power systems, the advantages provided by the use of this type of controllers are experimentally verified, namely ease of implementation, noise attenuation, smoothness of the control signal and robustness. Despite the fact that the prototypes develo- ped in this research work operate at low power, they allow us to observe the benefits of the intentional use of delays, described above, in a real application. We start with a reduced model of the fuel cell system where the dynamics of the cells is considered as an external disturbance. The above allows simplifying the analysis to the study of a step-down DC-DC converter subject to parametric variations. To evaluate the effective- ness of the PIR controller, a performance comparison against a PID controller is proposed. Based on the obtained experimental results, we present here the PIR controller as a better alternative to the PID controller in terms of the above mentioned benefits. Finally, the model of the system is extended to include the dynamics of the fuel cells and a semi-analytical method is proposed to tune the gains of the PIR controller. The tuning obtained following this method is put to the test by means of numerical simulations, achieving a correct regulation of the output voltage delivered by the fuel cell system."es_MX
