dc.description.abstract"The northernmost part of the Gulf of California (NGC), has great biological, geological, chemical and physical interest due to its endemic characteristics. These traits have been strongly modified by human activities in the last century. In this zone the sediment transport plays an important role conforming the sea bottom, maintaining the biological primary productivity and modifying the chemical composition of sea water. It is also associated with metallogenesis processes. The knowledge of sediment transport in the NGC is still scarce and its study can help to understand the above processes and the effect of human induced changes in the conformation of the NGC and other regions with similar hydrodynamic characteristics. Two main mechanisms of sediment transport exist: the suspended sediment transport and the bed-load sediment transport. This work focuses exclusively to the study of the second. A hydrodynamic numerical model was used in order to discern the dynamics of the sediment transport. This model is vertically integrated and coupled with two equations, the first describing sediment conservation and another semi-empirical equation of bed-load sediment flow. The model was forced in its open boundary with the M2 tide component. The conditions imposed to the model generate regions of sediment erosion or accumulation creating sand waves. One also sets out an explanation to the formation of bars in the bays of Adair and San Jorge. These results agree qualitatively well with the bathymetry of the AGC and similar works of sediment formation. The model shows sand bar formations in the bays of Adair and San Jorge that agree qualitatively with those observed in the region and with analogous works of sand wave formation."
