dc.description.abstract"The objectives of this research were to study the effects of high formaldehyde loading on a biofiltration system and to evaluate the effect of ozone pulses on formaldehyde biofiltration. In the first phase of the experiment, different loads of formaldehyde were run through a biofilter over a period of 206 days. In the second phase, maintained for 95 days, ozone pulses were added to the system. In both phases, a conventional biofilter with a bed volume of 2 L, flow of 2 L/min and a bed retention time of 60 s was packed with inert materials. Mineral medium was added twice a week as a source of nutrients for the microorganisms and to keep the biofilter bed humid. In the first experimental phase, formaldehyde loads of 19.7 ± 1.1 to 73.7 ± 1.8 g/m3*h and 22.7 ± 7.2 to 65.3 ± 2.6 g/m3*h were applied to the biofilter. The results show that at greater formaldehyde loads the microorganisms’ activity was inhibited by the presence of acidic by-products, including formic acid, produced during the biodegradation of formaldehyde. These acidic by-products affected the pH and the elimination capacity (EC) of the system. During the experimental phase without ozone pulses, it was impossible for the biofilter to operate under loads of 73.7 ± 1.8 g/m3*h and 65.3 ± 2.6 g/m3*h, because the pH in the biofilter reached values lower than 4 and the microorganisms were inhibited in this conditions. In the second phase of the experiment, we evaluated the effect of ozone addition on the EC of formaldehyde and on the principal compounds of the biofilm (e.g. carbohydrates, proteins and exopolysaccharides (EPS)). The results show that ozone had a strong effect on the EPS and proteins but not on the overall activity of the microorganisms."
