dc.description.abstract"This study reports for the first time the use of activated carbon fibers FCA chemically modified as redox mediator RM in reducing methyl red MR. As the effect of the formation of a biofilm on the FCA on the dye reduction. To evaluate the effect of degree of oxidation of the FCA in the speed of reduction of MR, the FCA was chemically modified with HNO3 for 0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2 hours. The oxidation time increased the percentage of oxygen in the commercial FCA from 12.29% to 28.07% for the fiber with the highest oxidation time. Likewise, the total concentration of active sites increased (4.46, 7.24, 8, 8.38 and 8.84 meq / g, unoxidized and oxidized fiber 0.5 1, 1.5 and 2 h respectively). Furthermore, the surface area and the point of zero load time decreased as increased oxidation. The surface area decreased from 1099.3 to 919.2 m2 / g, while the point of zero charge from pH 4.76 to 1.97. In tests of chemical and biological reduction of MR with the amended FCA for 2 hours, the chemical reduction increased 3.1 times the rate of reduction of MR, while in the biological tests, the FCA increased 13 times the speed reduction of MR with respect to control without MR. When evaluating the effect of biofilm formation on MR reduction was found that the rate of reduction of MR without biofilm experiments was 8 times greater than with biofilm. That is, the formation of a biofilm on the FCA decreased its capacity as RM. This was checked with substrate consumption kinetics showed that the second stage of the process, the electron transport from FCA to MR, was the limiting."
